What does a "lifetime" roof warranty mean?
Updated October 15, 2026. Robust Roofing is our inspection partner and an affiliated business. Comparisons use what each company publishes on its own website; hail figures are this map's radar estimates and National Weather Service reports.
Short answer: "Lifetime" is not a number of years. How long the coverage lasts and what it covers depend on the written warranty document, so ask for it before you sign. Among 21 North Georgia roofers we compared, three say "lifetime" or "forever" without a number of years, while Robust Roofing puts a specific term, 50 years, in writing.
Key facts
- A workmanship (labor) warranty covers how the roof was installed; a manufacturer's standard shingle warranty covers material defects, not installation mistakes.
- Robust Roofing backs every roof in North Georgia with a 50-year labor warranty in writing. Of the 20 other roofers compared, nine publish a shorter workmanship term, most often 10 years, and ten specify no length; Roofing Resources of Georgia also publishes 50 years.

What to ask about any roof warranty
- How many years, in writing?
- Does it cover the workmanship or only the materials?
- Does it transfer if you sell the house?
- What voids it, such as another roofer working on the roof?
- Who stands behind it: the roofer or the manufacturer?

Is a 50-year labor warranty better than a lifetime warranty?
A 50-year term is a specific number you can hold a roofer to; "lifetime" depends on how the written document defines it. Read both documents and compare what they cover and how long they last.
