North Georgia Hail Map

Impact-resistant Class 4 roofs for hail areas, from Robust Roofing

Look up your zip code on this map and you may notice something: the same neighborhoods show hail year after year. For homes in those areas, the roof that goes on after a claim is a real decision, and an impact-resistant Class 4 shingle is one of the best options available. Robust Roofing, known for the best workmanship in the region, offers Class 4 impact-resistant shingles, including GAF Timberline UHDZ, and installs them with the same complete system it uses on every roof. Here is what Class 4 means, what it does and does not do, and how Robust helps you decide.

What Class 4 means

Impact ratings come from the UL 2218 test, which drops steel balls of increasing size onto a roofing sample. Class 4 is the top rating: the sample withstood a two-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet without cracking through. That is a meaningful lab result, but it is a test, not a promise. Real hailstones can be larger, harder or driven sideways by wind, and a Class 4 shingle can still be damaged by a severe storm. Think of it as better odds, not immunity.

Does a Class 4 roof lower your insurance?

It might, but not because Georgia requires it. No Georgia law requires insurers to discount Class 4 shingles, so any discount is up to your carrier. Ask your agent before you choose, and ask for the answer in writing. Separately, HB 279 (2024, O.C.G.A. 33-32-11) requires insurance discounts for FORTIFIED-certified homes from 2025. FORTIFIED is its own certification program with its own requirements, so a Class 4 shingle alone does not make a home FORTIFIED. Robust's guides on the impact-resistant shingle discount and whether Class 4 shingles are worth it in Georgia walk through the math.

Upgrading during a hail claim

Many homeowners make the Class 4 decision right after a storm, when the insurance claim is already paying to replace the roof. A policy generally pays to replace what you had with like kind and quality. If you choose an upgrade such as Class 4, you pay the difference. With Robust Roofing that difference is shown openly: options and colors appear in the RoofMap homeowner portal alongside your scope, and a pay-over-time option is available at checkout for smaller balances. After an approved claim, your cost is normally your deductible plus any upgrade you choose. Robust never waives or rebates deductibles, which Georgia law prohibits.

Who should consider Class 4

Not every home needs Class 4, and Robust Roofing will tell you honestly when a standard architectural shingle is the better value for your situation.

A great shingle needs a great install

Impact resistance only helps if the roof underneath is right. Every Robust Roofing replacement is a full tear-off to the decking, with the decking checked board by board and replacement sheets priced before they go down, ice-and-water barrier where water concentrates, synthetic underlayment, new drip edge, flashing and pipe boots, and corrected ventilation. GAF certified crews finish most replacements on average-size roofs in one day, and every roof carries a 50-year labor warranty in writing on top of the manufacturer's warranty. See Robust's warranty page for details.

Is GAF Timberline UHDZ a Class 4 shingle?

According to GAF's 2026 product information, Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat carries a Class 4 impact rating, while Timberline HDZ is Class 3 impact rated on labeled packages.

Will Class 4 shingles lower my insurance premium?

Possibly, but no Georgia law requires insurers to discount Class 4 shingles. Ask your agent before you choose and get the answer in writing. Georgia does require discounts for FORTIFIED-certified homes, which is a separate program.
