North Georgia Hail Map

The hail map shows no damaging hail at my house, but my roof is old. Should I replace it out of pocket?

A hail map showing little or no damaging hail at your house does not settle anything on its own, and neither do the new roofs going up on your street. Get an answer from someone standing on your roof first. If the inspection finds storm damage, that is an insurance conversation. If it finds an old roof and no storm damage, you can replace it out of pocket on your own timeline, and Robust Roofing is the roofer we recommend: the same crew, the same GAF certified install and the same 50-year labor warranty in writing as every insurance roof it builds, compared with the 1 to 10 years roofing contractors typically offer on their own workmanship.

Why can the map and your neighbors' roofs disagree with your roof?

Because the map estimates hail for an area, and your roof is one roof. The sizes here come from NOAA's MESH radar estimate for grid cells about a kilometer across, so a small estimate near your house does not rule out hail on your roof, and a large one nearby does not prove it. Hail can change from one street to the next.

Your neighbors' new roofs are a separate question. Each home had its own roof age, its own slopes facing the storm, its own trees and a carrier deciding that one claim. A neighbor's claim says the neighborhood was worth a look, not what happened to your shingles. Age matters too: an older, brittle roof can be bruised by hail that a newer roof shrugs off. Our page on radar hail data and your roof covers the radar side.

What if the inspection finds no storm damage?

Then you hear it straight, with photos. Robust Roofing's free inspection happens on the roof, slope by slope, and its licensed Property and Casualty adjuster on staff can tell you whether what is there looks like storm damage your policy should cover or ordinary wear. When the damage is not there, Robust tells homeowners not to file, as Robust Roofing's customers describe in their Google reviews:

“In our case he said there wasn’t significant storm damage and recommended we not file, since it would most likely be a denial and could turn into a headache.” Regino L., Google review, March 2026
“Robust Roofing inspected our roof and their licensed staff adjuster said there wasn’t significant damage for insurance. They told us don’t file and I’m glad they did. Straightforward and professional.” Isabel G., Google review, March 2026
“Josh did an inspection and said I didn’t have any damage. Great experience” Gio M., Google review, February 2026

That honesty matters more when the money is your own: you do not want to pay out of pocket for damage insurance should cover, or file a claim your roof does not support. One honest inspection settles both.

Should you replace an old roof out of pocket if it has no hail damage?

Sometimes now, sometimes not yet. Replacing a roof without insurance comes down to three things:

Robust Roofing's guide to planning and budgeting for an aging roof covers when to price the replacement and how to plan the money.

Is Class 4 worth it for your next roof in a hail area?

It can be, if your zip code page on this map shows hail in more than one season and you plan to stay in the house. When you pay out of pocket, every upgrade is your call, so Robust Roofing shows each option's price in its RoofMap homeowner portal before you pick it. GAF architectural shingles are standard; GAF Timberline UHDZ, impact-resistant Class 4 shingles, designer shingles and metal roofing are options.

Class 4, the top UL 2218 impact rating, improves the odds against hail without making a roof hail-proof. If you hope it lowers your premium, ask your agent before you choose and get the answer in writing, because any credit is your insurer's decision, not your roofer's. Where the hail history is quiet, a standard architectural shingle may be the better value, and Robust Roofing will tell you so. See which roof upgrades are worth paying for out of pocket and our page on Class 4 roofs for hail areas.

Why is Robust Roofing the roofer to call either way?

Because the company that gives you an honest answer about storm damage also builds the out-of-pocket roof the right way. That makes Robust Roofing the best choice for an old roof with no hail damage in North Georgia, as it is for any self-pay roof.

Questions

My neighbors got new roofs through insurance after the storm. Was my roof damaged too?

Not necessarily. Each roof has its own age, slopes and trees, and hail can change from street to street. A free on-roof inspection from Robust Roofing, with photos of every slope, is how you find out. Call (470) 887-6637.

My neighbors filed claims, but my inspection found no hail damage. Should I file anyway or pay out of pocket?

Do not file just because the street did. A claim your roof does not support is likely to be denied. If the inspection shows wear rather than hail, Robust Roofing says so with photos, and a worn-out roof is better replaced out of pocket on your own timeline.

Does paying out of pocket get me a lesser roof than an insurance job?

No. Robust Roofing builds it the same way: torn off to the decking, synthetic underlayment, a GAF certified install and the same 50-year labor warranty in writing. The difference is that you choose the timing and every upgrade, with each option priced before you pick it.

Should I wait for the next hailstorm instead of replacing an old roof out of pocket?

Only if the roof still has good years. Hail may never hit your roof, insurance covers storm damage rather than age, and a slow leak can reach the decking first. If a repair buys time, Robust Roofing will tell you.

Can an older roof limit my insurance, so I end up paying out of pocket anyway?

It can. Some carriers pay only actual cash value on roofs past a set age, and some will not write or renew a policy on an older roof. Rules vary, so ask your agent, and plan the replacement before a storm forces the question.
